Hadrians Wall Walk 2015
This is the first part of my Triple Challenge 2015 and I want to dedicate my Hadrian's Wall Walk to the memory of my Granny. It is nearly 5 years since she passed away and I miss her lots. Everyone thinks my dad got me in to walking but it was actually my Granny. I remember that she used to take me on the Patterdale Healthy Exercise Walks (P.H.E.W.) in a pushchair and I used to want to get out and push the pushchair myself! Granny taught me about the countryside and flowers etc. and now I love walking and being in the open air. This walk is for you Granny.
5th April Arrive in Newcastle
I had a 6 hour drive from my Grandads house in Gloucestershire so I was very tired today. I want to say a big Thank You to Craig and Brenda from Europe car who drove all the way from Newcastle to give me and dad a lift.
We arrived in Newcastle for the start of our walk tomorrow. We stayed at the Hotel Indigo and spent a lovely evening in the city enjoying a wonderful evening in the spring sunshine.
6th April Wallsend to Wylam 18 miles
We had planned to get the metro train to the start of the walk at Wallsend but Craig and Brenda very kindly came back to our hotel and gave us another lift to the start at Segedunum. We walked all day in blazing sunshine. I have never walked in such hot weather and I found it hard due to the heat.
A really funny thing happened to me today. My feet were really hot so dad suggested I cool them down in the river while he went to queue for an ice cream. When he came back, I sat on a post to eat my ice cream and a dog came along and peed on the post all over my bare feet!!! I did not see the funny side at the time though.
7th April Wylam to Chollerford 18 miles
This day the whole walk goes alongside the Military road. It was hot again so it was really hard. I have walked in mountains that were easier than this day. We started to see the wall and some forts and milecastles today.
8th April Chollerford to Twice Brewed 14 miles
I loved today's walk. Still hot but amazing scenery and views. There was lots of wall to see and explore. We visited Housesteads fort along the way which is very interesting.
9th April Twice Brewed to Lanercost 14 miles
This was another fabulous day. Still in bright sunshine but not quite so hot today. There was a lot of ups and downs today but the scenery is amazing. We found the quarry where the Romans dug the stones for the wall. It was full of frogs enjoying the sun.
10th April Lanercost to Carlisle 14 miles.
Today was easy walking. There was not much wall to be seen but the views were great again. We live near Carlisle so it was nice to walk through a part of Cumbria that I had not seen before.
11th April Carlisle to Bowness on Solway 15 miles.
I enjoyed today although the walk to the finish line seemed to take forever. We even had time for a pub lunch (well a chip butty and coke!). We had a really nice evening in a pub too so two pubs in one day. I loved Hadrian's wall.
Thank you to Craig and Brenda. Bring on the next Challenge!
